CANVAS.
Canvas. Logotype design and branding for a cultural funding initiative. 2020.
Logo design and branding for CANVAS, a funding collaboration supporting a Jewish cultural renaissance, giving grants and resources to contemporary Jewish artists and making Jewish arts and culture accessible to wider audiences.
The mark is built on Niqqud, the vowel marks used in Hebrew script. The word CANVAS was first written out in Hebrew transliteration, then the letters themselves were removed, leaving only the Niqqud behind as brushstrokes. From those marks, the Kamatz, the vowel sign for the "ah" sound, was isolated as the final icon.
"As CANVAS provides tools to create and access contemporary Jewish culture, making it possible and approachable, so does Niqqud to a Hebrew text."
The Kamatz itself is drawn by hand rather than digitally rendered, and deliberately off balance, one stroke resting on the other in a kind of dynamic tension. It's meant to reflect the precariousness and interdependence built into any creative ecosystem, between artists, audiences, and the patrons who support them. The mark is paired with Pauza, a typeface from Tel Aviv's Fontef foundry, balancing modern clarity with the organic quality of the hand-drawn Kamatz.
